This presentation aims to empower clinicians to approach mental health and substance use from a family systems perspective. Participants will gain skills and resources for families to apply in and outside of treatment.

After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Identify occurrences of countertransference when treating a family system
  • Discuss the importance of family involvement in mental health and substance use treatment
  • Identify common barriers to family engagement in treatment

Newport’s National Director of Family Therapy Services, Samantha is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has worked with a family systems perspective to treatment throughout her career. She oversees the use of Attachment-Based Family Therapy as an essential part of Newport’s family programming. Prior to joining the Newport team, Samantha workedextensively with the LGBTQIA+ community, supporting individuals struggling with issues regarding gender and sexuality. She also specializes in treating trauma, including sexual and physical abuse.

Sherry is the Director of Family and Spiritual Recovery at The Retreat in Wayzata, Minnesota. She has worked with The Retreat’s Family Program since its inception in 2005. Sherry is a certified Spiritual Director, a certified Structured Family Recovery®️ Counselor, and a Nationally Certified Family Recovery Coach. In addition to her work at with families, she has led spiritual retreats and workshops internationally. She also oversees Kids CAMP at The Retreat, a program for children aged 7–12 years who are growing up in families impacted by substance use disorder.
