Our History
In 2008, Newport Academy, an entity of Newport Healthcare, was founded by Jamison Monroe Jr. and his father, and was set out to build a comprehensive treatment alternative to rehabilitation. With an approach based on addressing the “why,” not just the “what,” Newport Healthcare’s programs focus on the underlying causes of destructive behaviors, not just the symptoms. Today, Newport Healthcare empowers tens of thousands of teens, young adults, and their families through progressive treatment programs that achieve unparalleled outcomes.

2008
Newport Healthcare opens Newport Academy in Orange County, California. It was here, that we opened the doors of a six-bed facility for adolescent girls, and that we developed an integrated approach designed to balance the psychological, biological, social, educational, and spiritual needs of teens and young adults.

2009
Barbara Nosal, PhD, LMFT, LADC, joins Newport Healthcare as Chief Clinical Officer, developing and overseeing clinical and family programs. “Witnessing the transformation of teens and their families is the most fulfilling and meaningful experience I have had professionally,” she says.

2013
As the need for teen mental health treatment drastically increases throughout the United States, we feel empowered to open our Connecticut campus, allowing us to bring our evidence-based treatment approach—which includes residential treatment, outpatient programs, and Day Schools—to more adolescents and families across the country.

2014
Newport Healthcare’s Newport Academy is recognized by the Wall Street Journal for its culinary therapy—using cooking therapy as an aspect of treatment for anxiety and depression, and furthering awareness of how cooking enhances mental health.

2016
Newport Healthcare program Newport Academy receives the Gold Seal of Approval® accreditation from the Joint Commission for Behavioral Health Care. The Joint Commission is the nation’s oldest and largest healthcare accreditation body, setting the highest standards for healthcare quality. Considered the most esteemed international accreditation in US healthcare, the Joint Commission serves to improve the quality of patient care. Newport Academy met more than 1,300 standards and obtained high approval ratings from the Joint Commission.

2018
In line with our mission of addressing what is now a full-fledged adolescent mental health crisis, we continue to target regions where access to care is limited. We establish our adolescent treatment programs in the San Francisco Bay Area, allowing us to meet the needs of a region that experiences high rates of mental health concerns.

2019
Newport Healthcare expands its programs and opens Newport Institute for young adults, ages 18-28, and to the Pacific Northwest where we opened a Newport Academy male residential location outside of Seattle.

Our Future
Evolving the vision of Newport Founder Jamison Monroe Jr., CEO Joe Procopio continues to grow our family of programs, seeking to establish locations in areas where the need for adolescent treatment is great and access to care is limited. As Newport Healthcare reaches out to help more teens, young adults, and families across the United States, Joe and our committed and passionate team remain dedicated not only to results-driven, evidence-based clinical treatment—but also to the compassionate care, sustainable healing and unconditional love that is at the core of our integrated approach.
