Professional Development on the Job: Newport’s Clinical Training Program

At Newport Healthcare, our integrated model of care encompasses time-tested clinical modalities as well as scientifically validated experiential therapies proven to be effective for teens and young adults. We’re dedicated to ensuring that our clinicians have the skills they need, to address the ever-evolving mental health needs of our clients. To that end, we invest in the ongoing training and development of our clinical staff in both established and leading-edge treatment approaches.

“Our clinical training model is expansive and incorporates the most advanced, evidence-based treatment modalities for both our adolescent and young adult populations,” says Lindsay Daugherty, LICSW, Newport Healthcare’s National Clinical Program Director. “We continually assess in-house training needs and keep up with research and best practices within the field to ensure that we are providing the most up-to-date and effective treatment.”

Family Therapy: The Cornerstone of Our Clinical Model

The cornerstone of Newport Healthcare’s treatment model is our family therapy program, which integrates Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT) as our family therapy model and foundational element of our Clinical Training program. ABFT is the manualized and empirically supported, and specifically designed to target family and individual processes associated with adolescent suicide and depression. 

“ABFT emerges from interpersonal theories that suggest adolescent depression and suicide can be precipitated, exacerbated, or buffered against by the quality of interpersonal relationships in families,” Lindsay explains. “It is a trust-based, emotion-focused psychotherapy model that aims to repair interpersonal ruptures and rebuild an emotionally protective parent–child relationship.”

Newport Healthcare partnered with the co-founders of ABFT—Guy Diamond, Gary Diamond, and Suzanne Levy—to become the first residential program to establish ABFT as its family therapy model. Our commitment includes training all clinicians in ABFT, with family therapists attending both Introductory and Advanced Trainings, with the opportunity to pursue certification as an ABFT Certified Therapist. Following training, our family therapists receive ongoing clinical supervision and consultation with the co-founders of the ABFT model.

EMDR Training and Certification at Newport

Clinicians at Newport Healthcare can also receive extensive training, consultation, and supervision in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and can pursue EMDR certification. While EMDR was originally developed to treat trauma and PTSD, research shows that it can also effectively address other mental health conditions.

“EMDR can be utilized to treat a multitude of issues, including but not limited to trauma, anxiety, self-esteem issues, eating disorders, addiction, anger issues, and relational issues,” says Olivia Lynch, MS, LPC, EMDR Program Training and Development Manager for Newport Healthcare. An EMDR Certified Therapist, EMDRIA Approved Consultant, and EMDR Facilitator, Olivia trains clinicians in EMDR at both Newport Academy, our teen treatment program, and Newport Institute, our program for young adults. 

“By focusing in on a target memory and negative cognition, clients are able to use EMDR get to the root of where it all began, and process memories so they become less disturbing and more adaptive,” Olivia explains. “The client’s brain leads the way with minimal interference from the therapist, which is very empowering for young people.” 

Continued Skill Expansion for Clinicians

In addition to ABFT and EMDR certifications, staff receive training in a variety of the following modalities, based on their specific roles within the treatment team. Many of our trainings are delivered by our in-house clinical trainers, who travel throughout the country to our teen and young adult programs nationwide. We also contract with trainers from outside organizations to facilitate specialized trainings for our clinicians.

  • Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention
  • Advanced trainings for art and adventure therapists.

Clinicians can also submit requests to attend additional trainings supporting their areas of interest and expertise. Our model is standardized and manualized while also providing clinicians the flexibility and freedom to integrate their own areas of expertise and specialization in treatment.

Ongoing Professional Development in the Workplace

In addition to our more extensive trainings and certifications, Newport’s monthly clinical training series focuses on varying topics according to current clinical need, which are recorded for future viewing. “We have a large training library that clinicians can access anytime,” Lindsay says. Newport also offers conference participation and annual CEs for licensure requirements.

Beyond specialized training, professional development at Newport is ongoing. Utilizing a treatment team approach, clinicians meet weekly for collaboration and coordination of care, as well as with their supervisor for clinical consultation and supervision.
